A Lamb Hass Tree That Needed a Reset

We recently received a site visit request from the new owner of a property with a young Lamb Hass avocado tree that just wasn’t looking happy. One of our farm specialists visited the site to see what was going on and the issue became clear pretty quickly.

The previous owner had pushed the tree to fruit heavily far too early using unprofessional girdling. On top of that, the tree was severely under-watered under the belief that “shocking” it would increase fruit production. Unfortunately, this combination was doing the opposite. The tree was stressed, struggling to grow properly, and setting itself up for long-term damage.

At the time of the visit, the tree was carrying 42 immature fruits that might have matured by summer 2026 but only if the tree could survive holding them. The reality was that keeping the fruit posed a high risk: branch breakage, poor structural growth, and a strong chance the tree would drop most of the fruit right before maturity anyway.

Because the new owner values the long-term health of the tree and future larger harvests, the decision was made to remove all 42 fruits. This allows the tree to redirect its energy into proper root, trunk, and canopy development exactly what a young avocado tree needs most.

Our field specialist also created a customized care and watering schedule and delivered it to the owner, setting the tree up for stronger growth and much better crops in the years ahead.

We also want to gently remind growers not to rely on random YouTube videos for practices like girdling or stressing avocado trees. Not every video is based on real research or field experience, and following the wrong advice can seriously damage a young tree. Always reference proven sources, university research, or experienced professionals before making major decisions that affect your trees.
