The Sir-Prize avocado is a newer and exciting variety developed to offer the familiar look and eating quality of Hass but with earlier maturity, heavier production, and better cold tolerance. Sir-Prize performs well even in cooler growing areas where Hass can struggle, making it a strong option for inland and marginal avocado climates.
Sir Prize originated from a University of California breeding program. Its maternal parent, HX48, was itself a Hass seedling, making Sir Prize a “grandchild” of Hass. The variety was first propagated in 1991.

Fruit Characteristics
Size and Shape: Medium to large fruit, averaging over 350 grams on young trees. Pear shaped with a subtle ridge along one side that becomes less noticeable as the fruit matures.
Skin: Thin to medium skin, smoother than Hass but lightly textured. Green when harvested and turns black as it ripens, similar to Hass. Skin separates easily from the flesh.
Flesh, Seed & Texture: Flesh color and texture are very similar to Hass, with very few fibers. Seed is relatively small, averaging about 10–12% of the fruit size.
Flavor: Rich, creamy, and well-balanced, developing exceptional flavor and texture when harvested at proper maturity.
When to Harvest
Season: Typically matures 6 to 8 weeks earlier than Hass so starting around end of December depending on location and climate.
Visual Cues: Fruit is harvested green and darkens to black as it ripens off the tree. Size develops early, making it important to allow sufficient maturity before picking for best flavor and oil content.
Tree Characteristics
Sir-Prize trees are upright. The foliage reflects its Mexican race background and offers improved cold tolerance compared to Hass. Flower type is B.
