Pinkerton, one of the first promising varieties that came after the Hass. Here we go through a little history and how Pinkerton variety was found. Pinkerton originated as a seedling about 1959 that was growing randomly among Hass trees on the John Pinkerton Ranch in Saticoy, California. It was later patented in 1975.
The Pinkerton fruit is larger than Hass with pebbly peel that stay green at ripening. It has a small seed and very good fruit quality and flavor.
Pinkerton fruit takes more time than the Hass to soften about 14 days
The harvest season starts from middle of winter to early spring.
Pinkeron avocado tree blooms earlier than most other varieties over a long time period. Fruit that set early are rounder in shape and mature before the late set fruit. The tree has the same tolerance to cold as Hass and is a heavy producer. Pinkerton have stronger limbs and can withstand winds better.
In the 1980’s, it was thought by several industry analysts that Pinkerton could play a strong role in the California avocado industry. Unfortunately, importations of Hass from
Chile starting in the mid 90’s replaced most of the market for winter Pinkertons.
