Thinking about growing an avocado tree? Great! But now you're wondering… should it go in the ground or in a container? Either way can work, in this post we’re going to focus on growing them in pots because yes, it’s totally possible.
Here are a few reasons why growing avocado trees in containers might be the way to go:
You can move them around as needed, bring them indoors when it gets too cold.
You get better control over how much sun they get.
Not ready to plant them in the ground yet? No problem. You can let them grow in pots and they’ll keep growing and even fruiting so when the time comes to plant, you’re already ahead.
If you live in a colder zone, keeping them in containers gives you a real shot at growing avocados with a bit of care.
Not everyone has a yard, and that’s totally fine, pots work too.

Once you start, you’ll see how rewarding it is to grow your own avocado tree even more so when it starts giving you fruit!
You can try growing any variety in a pot, but some are better suited to container life than others. We’ve found that Big Black, Jan Boyce, Lamb Hass, Stewart, Little Cado and Don Gillogly work particularly well, and Holiday and Pinkerton are also great options to consider.
If you’re asking when’s the best time to plant an avocado tree?
The answer is: Yesterday! 😄
Start now, you won’t regret it. Avocado trees are beautiful, fun to grow and give you super nutritious fruit. And I’ll warn you… once you have one, you’ll probably want more.
