Fuerte is the variety on which the California industry has been built, and successfully introduced into many other countries. let's talk about how Fuerte became the original avocado!
Frederick Popenoe (owner of the West India Gardens nursery in Altadena) sent his son
Wilson Popenoe and employee Carl Schmidt to Mexico on collecting expeditions.
They found fruit they liked in the markets of Atlixco and followed them back to the mother tree and collected budwood, one selection (from the backyard of Senor LeBlanc) labeled ‘No. 15’ was budded onto seedlings at the nursery in Altadena, a freeze occurred in the winter of 1913 which killed most of the avocado trees in the nursery, except ‘No. 15’ , Popenoe named these ‘Fuerte’ (for strong)
Fuerte avocado fruits
Home grown Genuine Fuerte avocados are packed with flavor and of course very rare to find. Their special flavor makes them a favorite of many California avocado lovers no other avocado has a distinctly flavor as Fuerte, reminding us of eating fresh walnuts(hard to find a sample). Fuerte is medium to large sized,a little bigger than Hass. The skin is green with yellow dots, it remains green even when it’s ripe and the shape is similar to a pear (pyriform). The texture is fine, the
flavor is excellent and it does peel what else do we need from an avocado? that's why Fuerte is still many people's most favorite avocado variety!
Genuine fuerte avocados are hard to come by as there are lots of strains out there.
