The Hellen originated on a modest city lot in Santa Monica, California, where it proved its resilience under adverse soil conditions. That alone says something about its toughness.
Hellen is no shy grower. It’s vigorous, spreads wide, and builds into a large, well-shaped canopy but the size is also manageable. It’s said to be more compact than a Fuerte.
The fruit is glossy, green-skinned, and it stays green even when ripe. Shapes vary a bit, from classic pear to slightly pyramidal, weighing from 9 to 14 ounces.
The skin is thick and leathery, and it peels easily, which makes it a dream to handle in the kitchen. Inside, you’ll usually find a small to medium-sized seed and the flesh is rich, creamy, and delicious.
In fact, Hellen avocados have an oil content of over 20% by October, which is well into Hass territory. That high oil content gives it that buttery texture we all love.

Hellen’s harvest season stretches from June into October. This timing makes it an excellent follow-up to early season varieties and a great bridge into the fall harvest.
