It is possible to grow an avocado tree from seed and in very rare cases some avocado varieties like Fuerte, Hass, Gwen, Reed, Pinkerton came from seeds that someone planted or allowed to grow but if you want to grow an avocado tree with guaranteed tasty fruit then you must plant the grafted seedling.
When planting a non grafted tree from an avocado pit you must consider that the resulting tree will be different from the tree the fruit came from. For example, if you plant the seed from a Hass avocado, the resulting tree will not be a Hass.

How to plant a seed? Start with any avocado seed take it right from the fruit and place the seed in a pot with potting soil with just the top of the seed showing above the soil. Keep it moist and wait for it to germinate. Avocado seeds may be started in a glass of water or in a soil mixture. Either will work, but the soil method will provide faster results. After a few weeks there should be signs of a small shoot at the top.leaves will develop and grow on this shoot.
Water the plant often enough to keep the soil moist but not wet. A wet or dry soil will result in root injury.
After you’ve grown an avocado tree from a seed there are many possibilities you may keep it in a pot or plant it in the ground or maybe you decided to use it as rootstock and graft scions from famous avocado varieties onto it.
