Lamb Hass Avocado Tree: Workhorse of Fruit Production

The Lamb Hass avocado tree has earned a solid reputation as a high performing and reliable variety. Developed from a seedling of the Gwen avocado (Gwen itself is a descendant of Hass) on Bob Lamb’s ranch in Camarillo, California, which is where the tree gets its name.

What sets Lamb Hass apart is its impressive productivity. In multiple field trials, including those conducted by the University of California, it has shown excellent results. On average, it produces over three times more fruit per tree compared to Hass. Even more impressive, Lamb Hass begins producing commercially viable crops just two years after planting, which is remarkably early.

Lamb fruit is larger in size and later maturing than Hass. The flavor is great and the oil content also increases throughout the season.

Advantages

The tree has a compact, upright growth habit, making it easier to manage. It handles high-chloride irrigation water better than Hass. It has attractive deep green foliage, and seems to thrive through all seasons!

Another key benefit is fruit protection. Lamb Hass tends to set fruit deeper within the canopy reducing the risk of sunburn which improves overall fruit quality. Fruit often appears in clusters, and stems are short.

Extended Harvest Window

One of the most appealing features is the later maturity window. Blooming around April, the earliest fruit can be harvested the following spring, but the best quality comes mid to late summer. This later harvest complements other varieties' seasons like Pinkerton, Hass, and more.

Why Plant a Lamb Hass Tree?

With its strong yields, high quality fruit, and resilience in challenging growing conditions, Lamb Hass has proven itself to be a productive cultivar. For those looking for heavy production without sacrificing fruit quality, this tree lives up to its reputation as the workhorse of fruit production.
