Mexicola Grande Avocado

The Mexicola Grande originally comes from a seedling of the Mexicola avocado, developed by the University of California’s breeding program in Riverside. It was first known as “3‑1‑1.” After being released to commercial growers, a California nursery gave the variety its official "Mexicola Grande" name, highlighting its larger fruit size compared to its parent Mexicola. Because of its cold hardiness, flavor, and productivity, it's become well loved by home gardeners and some specialty commercial growers.

Here are the characteristics of Mexicola Grande fruit:

  • Size and Shape: Larger than typical Mexicola, fruits often weigh between 4‑12 oz, depending on climate, tree health, and growing conditions. They have an obovate shape.

  • Skin: Very thin and edible. When fully mature, the skin turns dark often deep purple to almost black.

  • Flesh, Seed & Texture: Creamy green inside the flesh is rich and buttery. The seed is moderately sized.

  • Flavor: Smooth and high quality. Rich, buttery, with a subtle nuttiness and slight sweet undertones. Excellent for guacamole, spreads, salads and sandwiches, anywhere you want the avocado to shine.

When to Harvest

  • Season: In California, Mexicola Grande is typically harvested from late summer through fall. In warmer areas or microclimates, you might see fruit ready earlier.

  • Visual Cues: As maturity nears, you’ll see the skin darken to a deep purple or almost black. For optimal flavor, once it has fully changed color, wait 1-2 weeks before harvesting.
